Breakthrough v/s Comeback story

Tashkent, September 8: Evenly matched contests between the Old and new , with senior pros on the tour wanting to use the event as their comeback vehicle and Talented juniors wanting to make a breakthrough , this may well be the story of the 15th edition of the Tashkent Open which gets underway tomorrow at the Olympic Tennis Complex here

The draws to the 15th edition of the Tashkent Open were made here by the WTA Supervisor Martina Lutkova. Tournament Director S. Uthrapathy , Mukhtar Rakhimov of the Uzbekistan Tennis Federation , Zikkrulla Asatov from the Tashkent Mayor’s office , Doubles Slam winner Yaroslava Shvedova and fast rising teen star Donna Vekic were present at an impressive draw ceremony held at the Olympic Tennis school complex .

Though the event sans big names it is one of the toughest event on the WTA calendar just by the sheer depth of talented players who have entered , observed former Wimbledon and US Open Doubles Champion Yaraslova Shvedova one of the regulars at the event during the draw ceremony . This year the main draw boasts of 12 players in the Top-100 in fray and 8 from the Top-125 bracket including some top ranked juniors .
Whether it’s me playing Vesna Dolonc , or Timea Babos taking on Yvonne Muesburger , Lesia Tsurenko playing Nastassja Burnett these are all tough first round matches , pointed out Shvedova.

The local interest will hover over Wildcards Sabina Sharipova who takes on fifth seeded Alexandra Cadantu and Nigina Abduraimova who takes on former World ranked 55 Petra Cetkovska who is making a comeback from injury, former Champion here in 2005 Michaella Krajicek who also makes a comeback bid will take on 88th ranked Belarusian Olga Govortsova in the very first round.

In the lots drawn today the quarterfinal line up projected may see Top seeded Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia ranked 58 take on the 77th ranked Galina Voskoboeva, Second seeded and 61st ranked Lesian Tsurenko Ukraine take on the 78th ranked Yaraslova Shevdova Kazakhstan , Winner of a Tour title at Bad Gastein earlier this year third seeded and 64th ranked Yvonne Meuburger Austria could meet title holder and 74th ranked Irina Camela Begu of Romania , while last years finalist and fourth seeded here 65th ranked Donna Vekic Croatia will take on 73rd ranked Alexandra Cadantu of Romania in the last eight.

Even Shvedova who has been out of action due to injury is keen to make a comeback in the singles , i have lost a lot of points and not played for some time due to injuries but I’m keen on improving my singles rankings which has been my strength , I always got better results in doubles but I want to improve on my singles ranking now , she said.

One of the fastest moving juniors on the WTA rankings 17 year old Donna Vekic who was finalist here last year added , Every player needs one good tournament performance , The event provided me a breakthrough last year , and I’m happy that a lot of youngsters are playing in the event and they will be challenging the seniors for sure and hope that they will also be able to gain some breakthrough here. Commenting on her draw she added confidently I expect same results like last year, at least if not better.

I’m happy that champions are coming back to the Tashkent Open , This year no single player can be singled out as favorite , the field is really tough , We are trying to make the event bigger and better every year said S. Uthrapathy tournament director.
