Unseeded Margarita Gasparayan of Russia and Mona Barthel of Germany upset fifth seeded Tatjana Maria of Germany and seventh seeded Evgeniya Rodina of Russia to move into the quarterfinals of the 20th Tashkent Open WTA Championships being played at the Olympic Tennis Complex here .
Other players to make the last eight included second seed Vera Lapko of Belarus, fifth seeded Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia , eighth seeded Dalila Jakupovic of Slovenia , Ukrainian Kateyna Kozlova , Next gen Star Anastasia Potapova of Russia and qualifier Fanny Stollar of Hungary
In the biggest upset of the day unseeded Margarita Gasparayan of Russia came back from being 0-4 in the third set to oust fifth seeded and 77th ranked Tatjana Maria of Germany 6-2,3-6,7-6(2) in a 2 hour 8 minute battle. In another upset Mona Barthel of Germany spent exactly 2 hours on the court to set up a 7-5,4-6,6-4 win over Russian seventh seed Evgeniya Rodina and move into the last eight.
In other second round matches played today Ukraine's Kateryna Kozlova accounted for Fiona Ferro of France 7-5,6-4, sixth seeded Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia ensured that the Tashkent Jinx of no champion coming back to win the title continued as she ended the challenge of former winner here Nao Hibino of Japan 7-6(5),6-4
In a battle of Next gen players qualifier Anastasia Potapova got the better of Olga Danilovic of Serbia 6-3,6-3 thus extracting her revenge for her loss in the finals at the Moscow River Cup final few months ago
Eighth seeded Dalila Jakupovic of Slovenia saved two set points in the second set to get the better of Dutch player Aranxta Rus winning 6-1,7-6(2) , Qualifier Fanny Stollar of Hungary ended wild card and former world No 2 Vera Zvonareva's run at the event winning 7-6(2) , 6-4 while second seed Vera Lapko of Belarus had a relatively easy 6-2,6-4 win over Ivana Jorovic of Serbia
Having spent more than 16 months out due to injury , Gasparayan who came into the tournament with a Protected ranking started the first set strongly breaking the fifth seed and 77th ranked German Tatjana Maria in the 5th and 7th games to win the set 6-2.
In the second set Tatjana Maria changed her tactics rushing to the net and executing deft volleys to win points and secure a break in the 8th game of the second set and then held on to win the set 6-3 an force a third set.
The 31 year German who won the WTA title at Mallorca earlier in the year looked to go for the kill taking a 4-0 lead , but the fighting Gasparayan got her act together playing near flawless tennis and hitting a series of single handed backhand winners to come back and level scores.
The German Maria Tatjana who looked jaded , showed some promise again earning two break points at 5-5 on Gasparyan serve but a long shot and a volley error saw Gasparayan survive and hold on to the game and go up 6-5 , Maria held her game forcing a tiebreak but Gasparayan took the tiebreak with ease to move into the quarterfinals..
I have Not played for a Year now due to injury , but I'm feeling good now , happy to end on the winning side" said the smiling Russian speaking to the Tashkent open Media team
Speaking on her match which she came back from 0-4 down in the third set Gaparayan said " I played aggressively in the first set. In the second set I made mistakes , in the third set I just got lost and went down 0-4 , but the I spoke to my coach , he told me be composed and gather my confidence and then I went for my strokes as I had nothing to lose . She was playing good in the match and attacking until she missed a volley at a break point at 5-5 and that got me going .
" I'm happy to survive and looking at making a solid comeback and making it to the circuit on my own , I still have two three events with protected ranking and trying to make most of it", said the 24 year old .
Former world No 23 Mona Barthel of Germany who has seen her ranking drop rapidly took exactly 2 hours to scalp seventh seeded Evgeniya Rodina of Russia 7-5,4-6,6-4 in an exciting match that saw Barthel hammering 16 aces .
Barthel broke Rodina in the 12th game after players traded two breaks each earlier to win the set 7-5 .In the second set Rodina raced to a 3-0 lead breaking Barthel twice , Barthel managed to break once could not recover and lost the set 6-4 .
In the deciding set Barthel got the decisive break in the 10th game of the match after a game of long rallies and win the set 6-4 . Barthel managed to avenge her defeat to Rodina at Gstaad this year and make it to the last eight.
