Seeds Buyukakcay , Cirstea out of 18th Tashkent Open .

Lucky  Loser Sofia Shapatava of Georgia and former world no  4 Francesca Schiavone  of  Italy crafted   first upsets as they knocked out  third seeded Cagla Buyukakcay  of  Turkey and  seventh seeded  Sorana Cirstea of Romania in the opening round of the 18th edition of the Tashkent Open WTA Championships being played at the Olympic  tennis School in Tashkent.

In the first round  Georgian  Shapatava who made it to the event as a lucky loser with Johanna Larsson pulling out took 1 hour and 10 minutes to upset a poor serving third seeded Cagla Buyukakcay  of Turkey 6/1 6/4.

2010 Rolland Garros winner  and 36 year old , Francesca Schiavone used her experience and one handed backhand effectively to upset seventh seeded and 2008 edition winner here Sorana Cirstea of Romania 7/5 6/2 in  1 hour and 12 minutes

Amongst the other seeds in action second seeded  Kirsten Flipkens  of  Belgium came of a rough first set to  out rally  Romanian  Ana Bogdan   7/6(7) 6/3  in 1 hour and 40 mins  , sixth seeded  Lesia Tsurenko of  Ukraine fresh from her triumph in Guangzhou showed the same form to dispose off Russian Evgeniya Rodina    6/0 6/2 in just under a hour , while eighth seeded Brit Naomi Broady took  1 hour and 24 minutes  to register a  6/4 7/5 win over Swiss Amra Sadikovic  .

In other matches  Ukrainian Kateryna Kozlova  made full use of the 12 double faults served by  her opponent  and runners up last year Donna Vekic of Croatia  to set up a   6/1 7/6(3) win and move into the round of sixteen.

27 year old Sofia Shapatava  currently ranked 206  proved truly lucky coming into the main draw  as a lucky loser to score a 6-1,6-4 win in  1 hour and 10 minutes  over  third seeded and 69th ranked Cagla Buyukakcay . Shapatava broke  Cagla who served poorly in the match in the 9th game of the second set and  hold her 10th service game and record a win and  move into  round two .

" Tashkent open  is Lucky for me ,  It was also my first ever WTA event in 2008 as I got a special exempt to play here . I had  a ticket to leave yesterday but I  cancelled it as I got the lucky loser spot  and now I won the first round", said Shapatava .   I was very comfortable , Cagla is tactical player and I had to take my chances , she added .


" It was just not my day , I did not feel the ball . There are some days when things dont work for you , I was missing real close  today " said the third seed Cagla who served 8 double faults in the match.

Former world no 4 and  currently ranked 102 Francesca Schiavone  of Italy took  hour  and 12 minutes to register a   7/5 6/2 win over former title winner here  and  seventh seeded Sorana Cirstea  of Romania.

Schiavone used all her experience and one handed back hand to perfection to script a win . Schiavone broke Sorana in the 11th game of the first set and then  in the 3rd and the 7th games of the second set   to move into round two  .

Schiavone who  finished finalist at Tashkent  in 2000 to local star Iroda Tulyagonova  " said   The match was tough one , Sorana  is coming back ,I   had to play good tactics and win every point , I played well and feel confident".
