Top seed Yaroslava Shvedova’ pretty smile , was larger as she scraped past Monica Niculescu in a marathon 3 hour 19 minute match. Even in her win she showed true spirit in acknowledging Monica’s tough fight and feeling sorry for having spoilt her birthday party.

On her marathon match?
Yaroslava :
Monica is a fighter and a very difficult competitor, her unorthodox style makes it difficult to play her. I’m happy to have got through today and ended the match on a positive emotion.

You looked in difficulty in the first set ?
I was feeling tight in my shoulder, my technique changed, I could not serve properly and felt like my arm was getting numb . But then I called for the physio and she released it for me and I started playing better.

Last time you played her at Wimbledon the score was very convincing and now a marathon match?
Yes I beat her rather easily at Wimbledon , but today Monica played extremely well , she put back every ball . Last year I have to concede my match to her at the Tashkent open as I had a bad stomach. But it’s like a revenge for me to beat her here. This is my second semifinal here and I don’t want to stop here.

What were your thoughts on the two match points against you?
After all the experience of the tour , I have learnt the match is nnot over until the umpires say it game , set and match .

But the match was long and you still look fresh ?
My parents are runners, and it has come to me naturally , I always have played better in the third set since my junior days without getting tired.

On snatching away victory from Monica on her birthday today?
Monica and me are great friends, we had breakfast together this morning. I’m sorry to have spoilt her day for her after she played such good tennis and came close to beating me , But remember it’s sport and these things happens.

Your thoughts on tomorrow’s semifinals?
Let me enjoy my win today evening, will start thinking my match and the opponent after that.
